Wonderland trail: Day 12 of 12

September 1, day 12
Summerland to White River CG
Our last day on the trail.
What starts out as a dream so far away, comes abruptly to an end and before we know it we are looking back on memories.
The day dawned foggy and cold again. I got this photo of the food bags hanging on the bear pole at camp early in the morning.

I was really cold this morning, even my feet hurt and I couldn't wait to get moving so I could warm up. We had all agreed to hike out together. Our "trail friend Ken" met us in the morning and off we went.
We didn't have to walk far to see the mountain and some blue sky ❤.

We were nearing the road, so another wide highway trail due to the day hikers. We saw several Wonderland loop hikers along with a lot of day hikers as we made our way down.

I took a photo of the bridge below because our "Trail friend Ken's" son was on the crew that built it. I took a picture of Ken on it with his camera, so he could have a memory of it.

The trail to the last river crossing,

White River

One more look at Rainier peeking at us. Yes, we walked all the way around you 😁.

Finished!

Ken suggested a celebratory toast to our completion 🥂
Thank you Ken.

Summary:
Wonderland trail totals: it's advertised as a 93 mile loop, 23,000 feet gain/loss.
My stats include: Goofy Garmin side trail blips, *old washouts and detours and mindless roaming around campgrounds looking for sites.
*These distances aren't reflected on the mile signs

My Garmin stats:
total miles hiked - 105.44
total ascent - 25,650 feet
total descent - 28,736 feet

No bugs!
6 days of clouds and fog
3 days of rain
3 days of full sunshine
Getting at it everyday took it's toll on me, there were 3 days in particular that stand out that I didn't think I could go on. I did get a head cold, that explains why I was cold & tired so much the last few days.
Thanks to my husband for being my Sherpa, my guide and my encourager. Thank you for helping me to chase this dream yet once again.
I can’t begin to explain how it felt to touch these treasured places in my heart once again. I am truly thankful that I was physically able to be there & to complete the “true” Wonderland loop w/out the alternate Seattle/Spray parks route for once in my life.

Seattle Spartan Beast 2018

We had one week after our Wonderland trail trip to recover. Our Seattle Beast/Sprint was the following weekend. Yikes! I think we scheduled things a bit too close together.
Oh well, time to Spartan up!
My legs were very tired after our backpacking trip, they wanted to cramp up most everyday & night. I still had a bit of a cold. I was a bit worried about how I would do in the Beast. We went on short walks everyday to keep my legs moving and I did what I needed to do to get ready for Saturday.

Saturday's Beast (12+ miles, 32 obstacles) was a mental and physical test for me (aren't they all - ha!). I managed to finish walking upright, but boy was I tired. Again, many thanks to my husband who helped me to fight the negative thoughts in my head as well as helping me physically all day with the obstacles.
This hashtag photo op was set up at the event, everyone was asking "why the clock"? Turns out it's to copy the clock at Pike's street market. Who knew....

Our course map and obstacle list. I'm learning to carry less water on the course as they have aid stations here and there. This year they had 9 water stations, that helped to keep my pack a bit lighter.

Our official Spartan pictures.
This year we had a river crawl, I'm glad the rocks were round they were hard enough on my knees. Ouch!

Every step was a mental focus for me Saturday. I saw this quote by Howie Stern and thought it fit my day. "She's hit that point where you look deep within to see what it is that makes you tick. That dark recess that only you can tap into to answer the simplest of questions on a primal level...It's all mental, as the body will follow where the mind chooses to go."

Finished!

A hard earned Beast medal. For me Saturday’s Beast was a “just try to get through it & finish” effort.

Seattle Beast Garmin stats:
total miles - 12.7 miles
total ascent - 1965 feet

Feeling much better the next day as a spectator, while my husband did his day 2 Sprint (3+ miles, 20 obstacles).

We are Spartans - Arooo!
